Laowa 105mm F2 (T3.2) STF Lens in CANON EF Mount (previously known as Venus Optics) is a full frame compatible, manual focus lens. STF stands for Smooth Trans Focus, in reference to its special optical system, which is intended to deliver smooth transitions between crisp in-focus areas and creamy defocused background or foreground areas.
This unique manual focus only lens has an integrated apodization filter that provides superior bokeh rendering and crystal sharp images. Full frame compatible lens featuring 11 elements in 8 groups with a 14 blade aperture and a minimum focus distance of just 0.9M. All metal alloy construction housing multi-coated glass elements throughout. At a focal length of 105mm and with the inherent softly diffused bokeh, this lens is perfect for portraiture. Suitable for Canon EF mount. Accepts 67mm filters.
The APD element resembles the function of an ND filter which becomes thicker towards the outer edge, gradually reducing the amount of light transmission towards the periphery to produce a soft, natural and beautifully diffused out-of-focus rendition (or called "bokeh").
The lens has 11 elements in 8 groups with one High Refractive element, three Low Dispersion elements and one Apodization element. This optical design is proven to deliver images with extreme sharpness and well controlled chromatic aberrations. The lens is extremely well constructed, the barrel of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability.
The Laowa 105mm f/2 STF lens has attained great reviews, many Highly Recommended, and is available alternative to the Sony 135mm STF lens and the newer FE 100mm f/2.8 STF G Master, The Laowa compares extremely well to other manufacturers, this is regarded as the best Bokeh lens on the market. The APD element allows the LAOWA 105mm f/2 STF to have a softly diffused edge on the bokeh, for a buttery, blurry out of focus (OOF) highlights. Whilst it does lack autofocus control, it does mean that the lens mount is easily adaptable onto various systems, including digital mirrorless camera systems. It also means that the price cannot be beaten for such a specialised lens.
Whilst STF lenses are primarily used for portrait photography, they can equally be used in any type of photo or video work where smooth out of focus backgrounds are desirable and a medium telephoto focal length is desired. The smooth blurred areas will look very analog "film like", so can be used in video and film production where the lack of electronics and manual settings in the lens is of added benefit.
